Add Color

Flowers or flowering plants offer variety and add splashes of color to break up the greenery.  Flowers also provide contrast and create remarkable focal points.  However, there is no specific requirement to plant flowers.  If you have a small outdoor space and prefer to use it more practically, there is a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables and herbs that produce beautiful flowers.  These include:

  • Purple chives
  • White spring onion
  • Yellow dill
  • Purple rosemary
  • Pale pink or purple thyme
  • Red pineapple sage
  • Purple or white basil

There are also various flowering fruits and vegetables that can be used for beautification and food.  Additionally, these types of plants typically attract beneficial insects to pollinate the plants.  There are insects that will  also get rid of harmful pests.

Create Diversity and Unity

This can be done by repeating a particular color in a variety of plants.  An effective landscape design trick involves using color themes to add beauty.  Below are a few ideas on how this can be done:

Add mulch to deter weeds from becoming a nuisance.  Taking out plants from the earth and composting them in pots or other containers is also a great way of controlling weed.  Additionally, this will prevent you from having to share plant food and nutrients with freeloading weeds.  This is especially ideal for small spaces to enhance attractiveness and practicality.

Add Garden Art

Garden art can be used to fill in blank spaces or simply to jazz up the landscape when doing landscape photography.  If your garden has a bare wall you want to disguise or you are renting and cannot paint the external walls, you have the option of putting up a bamboo blind.   You could also staple fabric to a contrasting timber frame and place outdoor furniture and potted plants in front of it.  There is also the option of using outdoor-friendly art pieces to decorate blank or otherwise unsightly walls.  This type of portable decorating can really assist you in enjoying your outdoor space on a budget.

Use Statement Pots

If you have special pots, they can be used to make a grand statement.  Big, heavyweight pots can be used to bring balance to a space.  They can also be used to display your favorite plants or a beautiful fruit tree.  Design techniques can be applied to bring more importance to these statement pots.  This can be done by contrasting the size of the pots or plants by which they are surrounded.

Essentially, dominance can be created using the pot you want to use as a statement piece.  Make sure the plants placed around it are tinier than the feature pot.  This creates unity as the eyes focus on the pot and then look at the rest of the landscape

Avoid Clutter

Avoiding clutter can be quite challenging, especially in a small outdoor space where you want lots of plants.  Clutter can make accessing and using the space quite difficult.  To prevent this, try to create a balance by not using too many different varieties of plants and containers.  Growing some indoor and placing them in areas where the lighting conditions are ideal could also help to reduce clutter.  You will still have your favorite plants around, without having all of them in the outdoor space.

Ferns can be placed in bathrooms as the lower light conditions and humidity  in many bathrooms would be ideal for them.  In the outdoor space, ferns could take up too much personal space.  Saving on that space would free it up for furniture or other plants.  Railings, walls and other vertical spaces can be used for hanging baskets or other containers.  This will free up ground space on a small balcony or deck.

These simple concepts can be used to remarkably transform your landscape from ordinary to spectacular.  They can remarkably transform the overall look and functionality of your outdoor space.  These principles are used by designers all across the globe to create spaces worthy of top-class landscape photography.
